How Does A Coffee Grinder Make A Difference?

If you ask, most baristas will tell you that a coffee grinder is the most important factor in making good coffee.

That, if you want to make better coffee, a coffee grinder is the way.

But how? Exactly. How exactly does a coffee grinder translate into better coffee?

Luckily, this is one of my favorite topics and it’s actually hard to make me shut up once I start going – so I’ll make an effort to be as concise as possible. For you, dear reader.

3 ways coffee grinders make a difference

#1 fresher coffee

You might not know this, but ground coffee can be considered stale a mere one hour after grinding it.

Coffee goes stale very quickly. This process is called oxidization and it is greatly accelerated when anything is ground. As soon as something comes into contact with oxygen, it starts going stale.

In fact, it is believed that most if not all coffee on supermarket shelves right now is most likely already stale.

If you have a coffee grinder, you can buy whole bean coffee and grind it at home.

That way you’re actually getting the freshest coffee possible – possibly even fresher than at a coffee shop.

#2 It saves you money

The biggest difference that many people will notice will be in your bank account: having a grinder actually saves you a lot of money.

Just go on Amazon and search your favorite coffee pre-ground.

Now look at the same coffee but whole bean.

The difference in price can be a lot, and in some extreme cases it’s actually half!

While it won’t be a difference that you notice immediately, over just the course of 6 months you will have saved enough to actually pay for the coffee grinder.

From then on you actually enjoy the same coffee, for way less money, and much tastier because it is fresher.

#3 It expands your (coffee) world

Getting a coffee grinder was the thing that helped me get to know coffee better. I was suddenly able to shop whole beans from all sorts of different sources – I could order beans directly from South America and be able to actually enjoy them thanks to my coffee grinder.

And that is what ignited my interest in all sorts of different coffee beans. The differences between Colombian beans and Brazilian beans – how a medium roast and a dark roast would taste different.

To put it shortly, having a coffee grinder helps you learn more about what coffee you’re putting in it.

And that, in turn, will make a huge difference in the quality of the coffee you drink at home.

And those are the three main differences that a coffee grinder makes. Now some experiences may be entirely personal, so maybe one or two of these may not apply to everybody.

In the same way, you may find that having a coffee grinder makes a difference in some way that’s not listed here but actually benefits you a lot.

And that is great! That is what I love so much about coffee grinders – and I fully recommend buying one if you’re thinking about it.

They can only make your experience better.
