In this day and age, it seems there is a trend where we are all looking for more ways to better our health.

From jumping in on the fad of strictly adhering to an organic or vegan diet to developing rigorous daily exercise routine, we are all trying to do what’s best for our bodies.

Why not kill two birds with one stone and jump in on this tasty trend and better your health.

In this article, I will list the top surprising reasons why coffee is good for you.

Is Coffee Good for You?

There is some debate about this.

There is good news, though.

Those who are on the other side of the debate and argue that coffee is bad, don’t recognize this fact: moderation is essential to reap the benefits.

Now on to my list.

#1: Coffee is Good for Preventing Disease

Studies have shown that drinking coffee in moderation is actually good for your health.

A news report by Harvard University, which cites the analysis of several research studies, suggests that drinking three cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems, some cancers and diabetes.

And even Parkinson’s disease, which means you can live longer.

#2: Is Coffee Good for the Heart?

Coffee has caffeine in it.

And caffeine is a stimulant.

So, coffee can’t be good for you heart, can it?

As stated above, drinking coffee can reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems.

This does indeed include “lowering the risk of heart disease and bad heart rhythms,” a suggestion made by studies being discussed at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual (2022) Scientific Session.

So, yes, coffee is good for the heart.

#3: Coffee Can Ward off Depression

You know those antioxidants I talked about?

Well, they are also good at preventing depression.

This is because they have properties that fight inflammation and promote microbiome health.

Also, there is a chemical in the blood called adenosine, which causes tiredness and depressed mood.

Coffee blocks your brain receptors from combining with this chemical, which leaves you feeling happy and refreshed.

#4: Speaking of the brain – coffee can actually make you smarter.

This may sound too good to be true, and in a sense, it actually is.

Coffee can temporarily increase recall and memory in the brain, but with those on the other side of the argument claiming that this is only for the short-term, with the effects waring off over time, as the caffeine wears down.

#5: Coffee Improves Physical Performance

A single cup of coffee can improve your performance in exercise.

Caffeine improves focus and energy, and provides us with much needed adrenaline during a workout when we want an extra-boost out of our exercise routine.

In fact, one study showed that cyclists who consumed two-hundred milligrams of caffeine had better time scores than those that only consumed one-hundred milligrams.  

Coffee also helps us burn fat more and releases endorphins, which produce a “high” after a workout and make us feel good.

#6: Promotes a Healthy Liver

People who drink coffee are more likely have liver enzymes in the healthy range, which protects the liver from developing cirrhosis, a liver disease that kills about 31,000 people every year.

#7: Is Black Coffee Good for You?

Seventh on my list is that black coffee is good for you because it contains a lot of antioxidants.

Antioxidants reduce cell damage, which promote overall good health.

In fact, consuming coffee is how most Americans incorporate large amounts of antioxidants into their diet, even more than from fruits and vegetables.

This is all according to WebMD.

This is good news for all who regularly prefer their coffee black.

#8: Coffee Reduces the Risk of Colon Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, drinking just one to two cups of coffee daily reduces one’s risk for colon cancer.

#9: Reduces the Risk of Getting Alzheimer’s Disease

There is some evidence to suggest that caffeine in coffee reduces the risk of getting Alzheimer’s Disease, which women predominantly develop.

Conclusion

Drinking coffee has many health benefits, but just like most things, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

Consuming too much caffeine has side effects, like rapid heartbeat, sleeplessness, feeling jittery and anxious and increased blood pressure.

Moderation is key if you want to reap the benefits.

If you follow this rule, you will notice the health benefits of drinking coffee and live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
